Wall Mount Eye Wash Instructions

Even with safety precautions, eyes can be exposed to foreign or hazardous materials. The use of a wall mount eye wash is a first line of defense when a dangerous material enters the eye. Permanent eye damage can occur in seconds if active decontamination steps are not carried out immediately. A wall mount eye wash works by diluting the dangerous material and flushing it out of the eye. It uses copious amounts of a drenching fluid, which is typically low-pressure, tepid tap water.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the location of the wall mount eye wash before carrying out activities that may necessitate its use.

    • 2

Move quickly to the wall mount eye wash as soon as any foreign or hazardous material enters the eye. Permanent damage to the eye can occur in seconds, so it is important to begin use of the eye wash as soon as possible.

    • 3

Hold both eyelids open and keep the eyes simultaneously in the drenching liquid.

    • 4

Remove contact lenses if they are worn. This allows the contaminants to be more easily diluted and flushed away from the eyes.

    • 5

Drench eyes in the eye wash for an extended period of time. The American National Standards Institute recommends a minimal drenching time of 15 minutes. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety recommends a 20-minute minimal flushing for unknown contaminants and a 60-minute flushing for contamination with a penetrating corrosive such as hydrofluoric acid or phenol.

    • 6

Drench the eyes longer if eye irritation continues.

    • 7

Seek medical attention with a qualified professional after using a wall mount eye wash.
