Remote Equipment Operation Safety
Some equipment, such as cranes or other construction equipment, can be operated by a licensed operator remotely. While remote operation is utilized for the safety of workers and operators, it is still important to adhere to operational safety rules.-
Check Area Around Equipment
-
Check the area around the equipment before use to make sure that there is nothing that may impede the equipment's movement. In the event that the equipment does become blocked during remote operation, make sure that it is shut down and power is cut off before attempting to remove impeding materials.
Stay Away From Moving Parts
-
All employees should stay away from moving parts of the equipment when remote operation is in use. When operating equipment using the remote settings, make sure that operators maintain an unobstructed visual of the equipment and the surrounding area at all times.
Set Controls
-
In the event that the remotely operated equipment can also be operated manually, make sure that the settings are in place for remote use before starting the equipment. If a control lock is available, make sure that it is engaged or that there is nothing that could trigger an accidental change of setting during use.
