Aluminum Wire Ground Repair

A ground is one of the single most important mechanisms within an electrical circuit. When repairing or replacing aluminum grounds, make sure that the wiring used is insulated, as aluminum can become corroded easily.
  1. Expert Insight

    • According to Daniel Friedman, publisher and editor of Inspectopedia, an aluminum ground is vulnerable especially to malfunctions occurring in an electrical unit. This is true despite the fact that the ground only conducts current on infrequent occasions.

    Features

    • You will have to use some form of connector to repair the grounding circuit. Friedman recommends using "pigtail" connectors when repairing aluminum wire grounding circuits. The connectors chosen should be ensured to meet industry standards. If you use twist-on connectors instead, Friedman recommends that "wire abrasion" and "pre-twisting" techniques are used (see resources).

    Considerations

    • Remember that a ground wire is a critical element for routing current during a malfunction, fault or emergency. If there is any concern whatsoever with regard to the integrity of the ground, it should be addressed immediately.

    Legality

    • Electric expert and researcher Jess Aronstein recommends that if there are any doubts as to procedures or code, you should contact your local building inspector to clarify any issues and set your mind at ease on electrical repair.
