Fire Hose Pressure Safety
-
Standard
-
The safety of fire hoses under pressure is subject to the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA's) Standard 1962 for the Care, Use and Service Testing of Fire Hose including Couplings & Nozzles. Hoses undergo a visual inspection before they are pressure-tested.
Pressure
-
Hoses can be pressure tested to levels up to 10 percent over the highest pressure they would use during service. Hoses less than 5 inches in diameter are generally tested to around 300 pounds per square inch (psi), while those more than 5 inches in diameter are tested to 400 psi.
Leaks
-
Where leaks are detected following fire hose pressure safety testing, a length of hose must be repaired before a second test is completed.
