What Kind of Oil is Needed for a Water Pump in a Honda?
Honda makes a variety of different types of pumps. The water pumps are designed for the removal or displacement of nondrinkable yet "relatively clean" water. While different models exist, oil selection and usage is similar.-
Identification
-
Honda water pumps are also referred to as de-watering pumps. While Honda has light-powered, deluxe and high-powered de-watering pumps, all of them have 4-stroke engines. The standard engines used in the de-watering pumps are the GX-25, GX-60, GX-120 and GX-160.
Oil Features
-
Honda gives specific guidelines for the oil to be used in these engines. They suggest SAE-10W-30 for most operations. This may change slightly given temperature extremes in your area (30 for higher and 5W for colder). Check your engine manual for the chart. Honda requires the oil to meet or exceed ASI classifications of SJ, SL or equivalent.
Considerations
-
Examine the oil level and character each time before starting your water pump's engine. If you've run it for 10 hours, check it again. When filling the oil, provide for an even or "level" surface. Only fill that oil until it reaches the bottom of the oil fill hole. You do not want to exceed or go below this recommended level.
