Tanker Electrical Safety
Because tankers often carry large amounts of flammable substances, the use of electrical equipment on tankers is usually restricted. This is done primarily to avoid fires.-
Appliances
-
All crew and visitors are prohibited from using most electrical appliances in their cabins. Exceptions to this rule are entertainment systems, electric razors, calculators and camera equipment, which are permitted.
Electrical Motor Room
-
Tanker operators must ensure that the electrical motor room is properly pressurized and that the alarm system is in good working order. Electric motor rooms that are not properly pressurized are prone to malfunction, which can cause problems while at sea.
Docked Vessels
-
When tankers are docked, all electrical cables connected to portable electrical equipment within hazardous areas should be disconnected from power. Adequate electrical insulation must be installed in tanker and shore cargo areas.
