Industrial Propane Safety

Propane is a non-toxic gas produced during the processing of natural gas and the refining of crude oil. Safety training programs for the propane industry are mandated by regulatory bodies including the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
  1. Training

    • Employees of propane storage and transportation facilities are required to complete a training program in the safe handling of propane and plant safety. The Propane Education and Research Council (PERC) Certified Employee Training Program (CETP) began operating in 1987 to ensure workers in the propane industry had the required knowledge and skills to ensure their safety at work.

    Design

    • The construction of propane facilities in the U.S. falls under the jurisdiction of state and local governments. Newly constructed propane facilities are usually planned with emergency shut off procedures to halt the flow of propane in an emergency situation.

    Firefighters

    • To ensure the safety of employees and the general public, the U.S. propane industry developed a training program designed for firefighters and emergency responders. The program is used at 35 state firefighting academies (as of 2011) and trains responders on the specific problems of emergency situations at a propane facility.
