How to Wear a Respirator

Workers should wear respirators when performing tasks that expose them to dust and particulate matter, harmful chemicals and other hazardous materials. Common dust respirators protect the lungs from dusts, mists, pollen and light pesticides, while cartridge respirators protect against stronger and more toxic contaminants. When wearing a respirator, it is important to test the device for proper fit. When worn incorrectly, the device loses some or all of its protective properties.

Instructions

  1. Dust Respirator

Place the mask against your nose and mouth and pull the elastic strap(s) around your head to hold the respirator in place.

    • 2

Cup both of your hands in front of the mask.

    • 3

Inhale deeply to ensure that the mask draws in when you inhale.

    • 4

Smile, then frown to make sure that air doesn't leak around the edges of the respirator.

    • 5

Readjust the respirator straps, reposition the mask on your face and repeat the tests until you verify that the mask fits properly.
