Ireland Crane Quay Safety

Quay cranes are used in commercial ports to transfer cargo, including containers, from ship to ship and from ships onto harbor storage areas.

  1. Safety

    • Irish ports publish safety guidelines for good health, safety and environmental practices. For example, quay cranes are only permitted to be used in quays and docks at locations permitted by Port Engineering Authorities.

    Visibility

    • Safety guidelines for quay cranes in Ireland require personnel and visitors within specific areas close to loading and unloading equipment to wear high visibility clothing and hard hats in designated areas. Crane operators should not stack containers close to fence lines, railways or buildings.

    Training

    • To train entry level quay crane operators in safety measures, the Port of Cork uses a simulator to help employees learn safe handling measures regarding the uses of cranes.
