How to Remove Latex Gloves

Latex gloves are one of the few pieces of equipment that can protect you from infection when handling items that may contain blood-borne pathogens. However, their protection can easily be negated if when removing the gloves you allow their outer layer to come into contact with your skin. To prevent this, there is a set of procedures known as Universal Precautions that help ensure your safety.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to an area containing a trash bin designated for hazardous materials. If no such area exists, go to a trash receptacle that has a plastic lining and is out of reach of children or pets.

    • 2

Bend your left arm so it's at your side with your palm facing up. Make a fist with your left hand and bend your wrist so your knuckles point toward the floor. This causes the cuff of the glove to extend upward.

    • 3

Pinch the cuff with the index finger and thumb of your right hand. Peel the glove away from you so that it comes off completely inside out. Keep the glove in your right hand.

    • 4

Turn your right hand up so that the glove it's holding falls into your palm. Bunch the glove into your tight palm and make a fist around it.

    • 5

Slide your left index finger under between the skin of your right arm and the cuff of the glove. Hook the finger under the inside of the glove and peel it off so that it ends up inside out. The left glove is now inside the right glove and only the inside of the right glove is exposed.

    • 6

Dispose of the gloves and wash your hands immediately. According to the website CardinalHealth, this removes powder and other debris from the gloves. This is important as this residue may otherwise irritate the skin.
