Liquid Paint Booth Regulations

A liquid paint booth is an enclosure used for spray painting operations. A powered exhaust system limits the amount of paint, residue and vapors that may escape. Since combustible materials are used in a paint booth, strict regulations are necessary.
  1. Location

    • The liquid painting area must be at least 20 feet away from ignition sources, operating electric motors, sparks and flames. The spray booth must also be separated from other operations by at least 3 feet or by fire-retardant walls. Additionally, combustibles should not be stored within 3 feet of the booth.

    Area

    • Safety goggles and a face mask must be worn while painting. The work area should also be protected by laying down drop cloths and closing area drains and vents. Cleaning equipment should be placed nearby to immediately clean up any spills.

    Spraying

    • While painting in a spray booth, operators must use mechanical ventilation to remove flammable vapors. Additionally, the piping systems that transfer flammable liquids to the spraying booth must be grounded and constructed of metal. Finally, only the amount of liquid spray needed for the existing operation is allowed in the spray booth.

    Prohibited

    • Exhaust fans with electric motors are prohibited inside liquid spray booths. Portable electric lamps are also banned during spraying operations.
