Standard Operating Procedures for a Ladder Truck
Firefighters use ladder trucks to enter, search, ventilate and perform rescues in burning buildings. Ladder truck operators must be trained in the correct procedures for operation, positioning and safety. Improper and inefficient operation can lead to unsafe conditions and accidents.-
Significance
-
Do not position the ladder truck where the aerial device will be required to operate beyond its structural boundaries. Avoid exposure to high temperatures and direct flames. When possible, place the ladder truck turntable in direct line with the chosen target to minimize twisting of the ladder.
Considerations
-
When attempting a rescue, position the ladder upwind from the rescue window if possible. Position the ladder truck close to the corner of the building to provide access to two or more sections of the building. During a rescue, position hose lines to protect the victim, crew and equipment. Position the ladder truck to maximize hose reach into the building.
Warning
-
The operator of the ladder truck must observe safety precautions at all times. Avoid uneven terrain, soft soil and sweep away any loose gravel. Sand, rock salt or anti-skid material should be placed under the vehicle tires in icy weather. Use precautions during high winds, which can affect ladder stability. Exercise caution around, and under, power lines and observe trees and other overhead obstructions when positioning the ladder. Consider the risk of falling debris and unstable buildings.
