Forklift Gas Tank Safety

Forklifts permit operators to lift and place heavy loads with little exertion. Forklifts can be powered by batteries, gasoline, diesel fuel or liquid petroleum gas (LPG). All forklift operators must be trained in forklift operation and safety, including the proper procedures for fueling.
  1. Significance

    • When fueling a forklift, do not smoke or allow any open flames in the area. Post no smoking signs and keep a fire extinguisher at the refueling area. Fuel outdoors or make sure there is adequate ventilation indoors.

    Considerations

    • When changing an LPG cylinder, do not use metal tools and do not use extreme force when opening the valve. Make sure the cylinder is not dropped, dragged or rolled. Never use matches or a flame to check for leaks. Allow a minimum of two LPG tanks on one forklift at a time. LPG is cold to the touch. Wear insulated gloves and coveralls while fueling, to prevent frostbite to the arms and skin.

    Warning

    • Before fueling or changing cylinders, turn the engine off and apply the brake. Any spilled fuel must be cleaned up before restarting the engine. Do not operate any forklift with a leak in the fuel system until the leak is repaired.
