Safety Precautions in Shaper Machines

Shaper machines are metal cutting machines used in workshops to cut angles, curves and other shapes. A moving table gradually feeds the metal after each tool stroke, creating a scalloped, yet flat surface. Shaper machines can be dangerous if safety precautions are not followed.
  1. Operators

    • Wear hearing protection, safety glasses or a face shield while operating a shaper machine. Avoid wearing loose clothing, rings and jewelry and tie back long hair. Wear appropriate shoes or boots with durable uppers. Carefully read the owner's manual and fully understand how to operate the machine.

    Machine

    • Periodically check moving parts such as belts and pulleys for signs of wear. Use a brush or stick to remove sawdust or cuttings around the knives, never use bare hands or compressed air. Maintain sharp cutters and keep them clean. Machine guards must be in the correct position. Stay near the machine while it is running.

    Operation

    • Remove any tools used in setting up the machine before turning on the power. The spindle speed and revolutions per minute (rpm) should be adjusted according to each job. Before turning on the power, square the spindle with the shaper table, correctly adjust and securely fasten the spindle top and knives and free the spindle. Keep hands away from the stock being cut and avoid feeding the stock too quickly.
