California OSHA Forklift Regulations
According to the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration operating rules, only qualified drivers trained in industrial truck safety may operate a forklift. Required training consists of formal instruction, practical training and performance evaluation.-
Significance
-
Inspect the vehicle prior to each shift for safety, paying special attention to tires, horn, lights, brakes, steering mechanism, battery, controller, lift system for forks and any fuel system leaks. Maintain a safe speed while in operation and keep a safe distance from other vehicles. Slow down and blow the horn at cross aisles or where vision is obstructed. Look in the direction of travel and do not move vehicle until the course is clear. Avoid driving up to anyone standing in front of a fixed object.
Considerations
-
Slowly ascend and descend grades and carry forks as low as possible. Set brakes and lower forks when leaving vehicle unattended. Only operate on floors and platforms that will safely support the loaded vehicle. Only authorized drivers may operate a forklift on elevators.
Warnings
-
Do not allow riders to ride on forks or on the forklift unless the vehicle is equipped with riding facilities. There should be no standing, passing or working under the elevated section of the vehicle, either loaded or empty, unless it is blocked from falling. Do not load the forklift in excess of its allowed capacity.
