Power Hammer Safety
There are a number of safety concerns with power hammer use. Power hammers are included in the category of tools known as pneumatic tools, which are powered by compressed air and include chippers, drills, hammers and sanders.-
Secure Attachments
-
Check the tool to see that it is fastened securely to the air hose. Use a short wire or positive locking device to attach to the air hose. Install a safety excess flow valve in case of failure if the hose is less than 1/2 inch in diameter. Install a safety clip or retainer to keep chisels on a chipping hammer from being ejected.
Protection from Flying Debris
-
Screens must be set up to prevent nearby workers from being struck by flying fragments when using a pneumatic hammer. Eye protection is required when using the tool, and head and face protection is recommended whenever pneumatic tools are used.
Hearing Protection
-
Noise is an inherent danger when working with pneumatic tools. Exposure to noisy tools such as jackhammers or pneumatic hammers can cause significant hearing loss over time. Appropriate ear protectors are vital when using these tools.
