Safety Training for Skid Steers

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, or NIOSH, more than 100 workers were killed between 1980 and 1997 from improper use of skid steer loaders. The NIOSH now recommends safety training to help prevent injuries from skid steer use.
  1. General Safety

    • The first portion of Bobcat's Skid Steer Safety Training program covers Occupational Safety and Health Administration safety standards regarding the use of seat belts, awareness of potential hazards and understanding of basic skid steer loader components.

    Maintenance

    • The second safety training portion discusses the fundamentals of working with hydraulics and general servicing issues.

    Operation

    • The training then focuses on operating the loader, including getting on and off the machine safely, which in itself resulted in five deaths between 1992 and 1994, according to the NIOSH study.

    Delivery

    • The Bobcat Skid Steer Loader Safety Training program includes printed materials with diagrams and basic safety checklists for participants, video presentations and group exercise materials. The session ends with a question-and-answer period. Trainers do not need specific credentials to train others.
