Hazmat Testing
Hazardous materials, also known as "hazmat," testing is a requirement for professional truck drivers and any other professional who requires a hazardous materials endorsement on his commercial driver's license (CDL).-
Defining Hazardous Materials
-
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) defines materials in various forms that can cause injury, chronic health conditions, structural damage or even death. The primary source of hazardous materials being released into the public is through transportation accidents and can include poisons, radioactive substances and combustible materials.
Hazmat Testing & Endorsement
-
To get a hazmat endorsement on their CDLs, truck drivers must pass hazmat testing. Several online testing options are available, but some states require in-person testing at a local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. To be sure of the requirement in your state, contact your local DMV.
TSA and Hazmat
-
In addition to passing hazmat testing, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), in attempt to ensure transporters of hazardous materials do not pose a security risk, requires additional information. The TSA runs checks on criminal history, legal status and citizenship, and requires a driver's fingerprints to be in a registered database.
