Combustible Dust Safety Training

Combustible dust can be a big problem for businesses as it can build up and cause explosions. It is important for both managers and employees to recognize potential hazards and be trained to prevent them.
  1. Definition

    • According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, combustible dust is any combustible material, and certain materials classified as noncombustible, that can burn rapidly and even become explosive in the right concentration. Some things that can produce combustible dust are coal, wood, metals like aluminum and magnesium, sugar, soap and certain textiles.

    Management Training

    • Management teams must conduct a facility analysis to become aware of the potential explosion hazards in their facility before developing plans to prevent and protect from these dangers. Each supervisor should also be aware of ignition control programs and seek further safety training through specialized classes.

    Employee Training

    • Employees must be trained and educated on the facility they are working in and be able to recognize and prevent possible hazards. Additionally, any employees handling combustible dusts are required to comply with the Hazard Communication standard, which states that employees must be familiar with safety data sheets and that any hazardous material must have clearly written labels.
