3M Respirator Training
3M Worldwide supplies a range of products, including respirators. Employers who purchase respirators for workers can consult the 3M respirator training guidelines to establish procedures for proper use of this piece of equipment in the workplace.-
Requirements
-
An employer must evaluate respiratory hazards in the workplace and other factors to select the appropriate respirator for employees. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires appropriate training for all workers who must wear a respirator; it is also recommended for employees who merely opt for this equipment.
Significance
-
Respirator training must be thorough, easy to understand, and take place at least once a year and more often if needed. 3M provides training for each of its respirator products, as well as an overview for employers highlighting training course requirements.
Considerations
-
OSHA requires that employers provide training on workplace respiratory hazards; the uses and limitations of the respirator; how to wear the respirator and check the seal; how to care for the device; and how to recognize medical symptoms that might limit the respirator's benefit. Employers must also conduct respirator fit tests for each employee and document employees' completion of the respirator training.
