Coal Tar Pitch and Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment

Coal tar pitch is a black, thick, strong-smelling liquid used in roofing, paving, and in asphalt products. This hazardous substance is a carcinogen and can have harmful effects if inhaled or passed through the skin. Personal protective clothing and equipment are essential for anyone exposed to coal tar pitch.
  1. Types

    • While you work with coal tar pitch volatiles, wearing full-body, chemical-resistant protective clothing is necessary to prevent skin contact with coal tar pitch. Respirators approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) or the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are required when you enter coal tar pitch closed vessels and tanks.

    Identification

    • Chemical resistant gloves should be made of viton, nitrile rubber, barricade, or saranex for effective prevention of skin contact. According to the State of New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services website, indirect-vent, splash-proof safety goggles are mandatory when working with coal tar pitch liquids and non-vented, impact-resistant goggles are required when working with coal tar gases, fumes, or vapors. Face shields are advisable for additional face protection, worn along with other safety eye wear.

    Warnings

    • Personal protective clothing and equipment that is damaged or defective should not be worn. If protective clothing becomes contaminated, change into clean clothing. After exposure to coal tar pitch, change clothing and place all contaminated items into closed containers to be cleaned or destroyed.
