Ladder Inspection Training

Employers are responsible for protecting their workers from safety hazards and doing what is necessary to prevent accidents and injuries on the job. When the job calls for workers to use ladders, safety inspections can make sure ladders are in safe operating order.
  1. Identification

    • Ladder inspection training teaches employers and workers how to identify ladder hazards. For example, OSHA says that ladders must be kept free of oil, grease, paint, debris and other slip hazards. Slipping causes workers to lose their footing while climbing up or down a ladder, which can result in a serious injury or fall.

    Condition

    • Workers must be taught how to assess the condition of a ladder prior to using it. If evidence of wear and tear or defective parts is spotted during inspection, the ladder's use should be discontinued until it is repaired or replaced. Additionally, ladders must be labeled with a warning sign if they are not functional, such as "Out of order" or "Do not use."

    Frequency

    • Newly hired workers must receive ladder inspection training as part of their new employee orientation. It is also imperative to provide refresher safety trainings to existing workers that cover ladder inspection criteria so workers can recall necessary safety measures.
