ANSI 207 Compliance

According to the American National Standards Institute, the ANSI 207 standard is designed to cover the manufacturing process and use of high-visibility safety vests worn by police, fire departments and other first responders in emergency situations.
  1. History

    • ANSI is responsible for the creation, use and administration of standards and guidelines used in the U.S. and around the world. The Ohio Department of Public Safety reports that ANSI introduced the ANSI 207 standard to replace the ANSI 107 standard for high-visibility vests.

    Design

    • To comply with the ANSI 207 standard, a high-visibility vest must contain a combination of fluorescent and retro-reflective material, according to the Ohio Department of Public Safety. ANSI 207 requires a high-visibility vest must contain 450 square inches of high-visibility fluorescent background material and 201 square inches of reflective material.

    Color Specific

    • The ANSI reports the 207 standard regulations require reflective material to be in specific colors to differentiate between police, fire and EMS departments. High-visibility vests are also manufactured with fabric fasteners, allowing the vest to be pulled from the body of an individual if it becomes attached to a passing vehicle.
