Proper Procedures for Using a Manlift
A manlift, sometimes called an aerial lift, is a mobile, hydraulically-powered device with an extendable boom and a platform. It is used for raising personnel off the ground to perform a variety of tasks.-
Training
-
Before attempting to use a manlift, employees should be properly trained and know how to safely operate the equipment. Since some companies have more than one type of manlift, it is important that an operator be familiar with the specific equipment he will be using. Training should include reading the operator's manual and hands-on instruction.
Preventive Maintenance Checks
-
Before starting to work on a manlift, the employee should ensure that it is in good working condition. Employers should have a standard preventive maintenance checklist that includes the inspection of all hydraulic lines, electrical controls, tires and safety devices.
Personal Protective Equipment
-
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that manlift operators wear safety harnesses and be completely "tied off" at all times when they are in a manlift basket.
Dangerous Environments
-
Manlift operators should avoid coming into contact with power lines due to the potential for electrocution. They should also check the area where the lift will be operated and ensure the ground is level, as manlifts can easily tip over if operators are careless.
