OSHA Standard for a Crane-Lifted Man Basket

In the construction industry, workers often need to do work in hard-to-reach places. Sometimes, cranes lift men in baskets to reach work sites. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration sets standards for this activity to protect workers.
  1. Behavior

    • According to OSHA, men who are lifted by crane in a basket must adhere to safety standards to prevent fall injuries. For example, employees must stand firmly in the basket and never climb or sit on the edge of a basket.

    Movement

    • Once baskets are lifted up and are in a stationary position, the crane must not be moved, especially if attached to a truck. Brakes must be set to ensure the equipment does not accidentally roll, which could injure the man in the basket.

    Inspection

    • Before use, cranes and lifts must be inspected to ensure they are in good operating condition. Specifically, the controls that operate the equipment are tested, the basket assessed to make sure it is safely cradled and outriggers stowed in position. Any detected faults must be corrected before work can be resumed.
