Industrial X-Ray Equipment Safety

X-rays are powerful tools, but the more powerful they are, the more emphasis should be put on safe design. Understanding why x-rays can be dangerous and the safety standards attached to them will make for a safer environment during their use.
  1. Need for Caution

    • The need for safety while using any x-ray equipment arises from the levels of radiation present during their use, according to Adam Weaver of the University of Southern Florida. X-rays emit hazardous radiation levels from their primary beams, leakage due to defective equipment and diffracted primary beam rays.

    Safety Design Standards

    • X-ray design standards are set forth to ensure safe operation for those that operate them. In Canada, for example, industrial x-ray equipment is regulated on a federal level. According to Health Canada, the Radiation Emitting Devices (RED) Act was designed to provide regulations for different classes of x-ray equipment.

    Necessary Safety Features

    • According to Health Canada, industrial x-ray equipment should be equipped with a functioning control console, radiation-shielding and caution labeling. All machines should also have a clear "on/off" control and an automatic radiation alarm system.
