Mini Excavator Safety

Operating a mini-excavator--a power shovel--is dangerous work. A moment of inattention or confusion could result in crushing a co-worker or bystander. Many regulations and recommendations are in place to mitigate some of the risk of operating a mini-excavator.
  1. Recongize Unsafe Conditions

    • According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), employers should provide training in recognizing hazardous conditions, as well as training in basic safety precautions (such as establishing a safety barrier around the excavator).

    Equipment Training

    • Operators need training for the specific excavator they will be using. This will provide information regarding any significant safety concerns for a particular excavator and any procedures that should be followed if the work area becomes obstructed.

    Rental Equipment

    • When renting equipment (including mini-excavators), be sure that an operator's manual is included and that the rental company ensures the equipment is in proper working order. In addition, the rental company should provide safety training to its employees who are assigned to work on a particular piece of equipment.
