Grounds Maintenance Safety
Grounds maintenance workers can be exposed to a number of hazards while working on the job. These can be from equipment, flying debris and a number of other potential dangers. Awareness of these issues helps prevent accidents.-
Lawn Equipment Hazards
-
Lawn equipment such as mowers and weedeaters can create flying debris and cause injuries from moving parts. Workers should examine the machine before work for any damaged or worn parts. They should also check to make sure that guards on weedeaters and mowers are in place before starting them up.
Personal Protective Gear
-
Personal protective gear is essential to preventing worker injuries. Mowers can emit high noise levels that can damage hearing. Workers should wear either ear plugs or the proper head phones to keep their hearing safe. Eye protection can prevent injury from flying debris from mower blades, either in the form of safety glasses or goggles.
Other Considerations
-
Fuel is best stored in an area with appropriate ventilation and containers specifically designed to hold it. Label each fuel container clearly to show what type it holds, such as kerosene, gas or diesel. Workers can also protect themselves by wearing pants, work boots and gloves while working. They can stay healthy by taking a break and keeping hydrated while working.
