Respirators & Dust Masks

Dust masks and respirators both provide a measure of protection against dust and debris in the air. A respirator may also protect against smoke and gases. It's important to have the appropriate protection for your situation.
  1. Features

    • A dust mask usually consists of a pad held across the nose and mouth with elastic straps. Dust masks help prevent the inhalation of larger particles. However, they do allow some particles to be inhaled and do nothing to prevent the inhalation of gases. A respirator usually fits over the face more snugly than a dust mask and provides better protection against a greater range of pollutants.

    Types

    • Some dust masks are made of a simple cloth pad. Others use more sophisticated materials to filter out smaller particles. You can find air-purifying respirators which force the air through a filter. There are also air-supplied respirators, which deliver an alternate supply of breathable air to the wearer.

    Warning

    • Make sure that your dust mask or respirator can provide you with adequate protection. You can find detailed information about respiratory protection on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's website.
