Jib Crane Safety
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires certain safety precautions when using any type of crane. These regulations are designed to protect employees and bystanders from harm due to the crane's operation.-
Definition
-
According to OSHA, a jib crane, also known as a wall crane refers to a crane that has a jib, regardless of whether a trolley is included. It is supported from a side wall, or line of building columns. This crane is designed for traveling and uses a runway attached to the support.
Modification
-
According to OSHA, cranes may be modified as long as the modifications and supporting structure are evaluated by a qualified engineer. Once it has been tested, the new load rating must be displayed.
Load Rating
-
OSHA further requires the load rating be marked plainly on each side of the crane. This is also true of any modified load ratings.
