Dump Truck Safety
In 2004, the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration states that 381 serious accidents occurred involving dump trucks and large trucks. These vehicles have to be operated with great attention to safety and use of proper procedures.-
Hazards
-
Dump trucks present a number of hazards when getting in and out of the truck, dumping a load or in an accident. A worker repairing the underside of the truck can also be injured. These accidents can be prevented through training and use of safe practices. These include a vehicle inspection and proper unloading procedures.
Prevention/Solution
-
Dump truck operators learn how to unload properly on uneven surfaces. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration requires training in safety procedures for all employees operating and maintaining these vehicles. This training includes hazard recognition and prevention, and how to use another person to aid in backing up. Drivers also learn how to dump properly on uneven surfaces.
Further Considerations
-
Inspection of the vehicle should include the brakes, engine fluids, lights, tires and operating systems. Tires should be at the proper pressure to help a load stay even when dumped. The lift arm support needs to be in place when the bed is up to protect those standing near it.
