Boom Truck Safety

A boom, or bucket, truck has a lift fitted with a bucket for a worker to ride and do maintenance work in high areas. These trucks require strict safety procedures to prevent accidents from occurring.
  1. Hazard Awareness

    • Boom truck operators learn to properly control the equipment.

Boom truck operator training helps to raise awareness of potential hazards and to properly operate the machine. The individual learns to use the machine controls and how to inspect the vehicle before use. This includes checking for any fluid leaks, any damaged parts, tire condition and lighting on the truck.

    Significance

    • The operator should wear a full safety harness and lanyard while in the bucket for fall protection. Hard hats are another measure if there is a danger of items striking the worker from overhead. Warning signs and caution tape can be used on the ground to warn pedestrians to steer clear of the area.

    Other Considerations

    • Boom trucks need to have the manufacturer's instructions, four emergency cones, first aid kit, wheel blocks and ABC extinguisher on board. The placement of the fire extinguisher needs to be shown on the outside of the truck.
