What Are the Causes of Forklift Accidents?

Forklift accidents do not account for the majority of accidents in the workplace, but they do account for a large number of workplace injuries. Causes of forklift accidents vary, and while most accidents are caused by driver error, other workplace factors as well as equipment failures can cause accidents.
  1. Operator Error

    • Forklift drivers are required to be properly trained and licensed before using a forklift. In some instances, accidents are caused by the driver's lack of training and driving knowledge. The company is at fault in these types of accidents. Operator error accidents can also occur when properly trained drivers just fail to follow safe driving rules. Speeding, horseplay and blatant careless driving account for the majority of forklift accidents caused by operator error.

    Workplace Environment

    • It's difficult, especially if a company moves their operations into an existing building, to design work space around forklift needs. This problem can be a cause of forklift accidents in the workplace. Inadequate lighting can make it difficult to see where you are going or to notice obstacles in your way. Blind spots, places where it is difficult to see what is near or ahead, such as corners and intersections, make it difficult to avoid accidents at these locations. Aisle width is another cause of forklift accidents in the workplace. If aisles are too narrow, then the forklift drivers will have trouble maneuvering.

    Faulty Equipment

    • Equipment that does not function properly can cause forklift accidents as well. Forklifts should have working horns and a back-up alarm to help notify pedestrians and other drivers to proceed with caution. In addition, forklifts should be equipped with a proper set of tires. The types of tires required will depend primarily on the type of surface the forklift will be used on.
