ASME Physical Requirements
-
Vision
-
To meet ASME physical requirements, you must have at least 20/30 vision in one eye and 20/50 vision in the other eye. Your vision must be measured based on the Snellen chart, which is an eye chart that measures visual acuity. These visual requirements can be met with or without the use of corrective lenses. You must also be able to differentiate between colors.
Hearing
-
A physician will test your auditory senses to determine if you have adequate hearing. You may use a hearing aid during this test.
Physical Examination
-
You will have to submit to a full medical physical so your doctor can determine if you possess sufficient reflex speeds and enough strength, stamina, dexterity and coordination to operate a crane.
Substance Abuse Test
-
Passing a substance abuse test is also part of the ASME physical requirements. The test must be performed by a recognized laboratory service and must meet the level of testing standards of the state in which the crane operator will work.
Medical Verification Form
-
In addition to performing the vision, auditory physical and substance abuse tests, you will have to sign a medical verification form stating that you are not prone to dizziness, are emotionally stable, possess no physical defects and do not pose a hazard to yourself or others. The form also requires you to state that you do not suffer from seizures or any other loss of physical control. The tests and form need to be completed once every three years.
