Track Dozer Safety Tips
Track dozers are designed to move large amounts of coal, soil, sand, rubble or other construction material with each push. Because of their enormous size, their operation can be very dangerous. Dozer operators need to recognize and respond to potentially hazardous situations. Most accidents occur when the dozer operator or workers nearby fail to obey basic safety rules.-
Training
-
Only trained and qualified workers should operate a track dozer. They must follow all workplace safety requirements as well as those in the equipment operating manual. Dozer operators need to understand and follow all warning labels and signs posted on the machine.
Performing Maintenance
-
Periodic safety inspections and scheduled maintenance of all track dozer systems should be performed by qualified personnel in accordance with operating manual standards. Safe maintenance practices include performing all work with the dozer on level ground, wearing the proper personal protective equipment, following applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations, and making all needed repairs before the track dozer is returned to service. Operators should take special precautions when refueling or adding coolant or oil. They should know how to use a fire extinguisher and have one available.
Before Work
-
Track dozer operators need to perform a pre-start inspection. They should also check around the machine to ensure the area is free of obstacles and that all personnel are clear. Operators must make sure the horn and automatic back-up alarm are functional. Visibility is critical; windows must be clean and unobstructed.
Mounting and Dismounting
-
Workers need to mount and dismount track dozers using only the steps and handholds provided; never climb or walk on the tracks. Operators should face the machine and maintain three-point contact (one foot and two hands or two feet and one hand) at all times. Never mount or dismount a moving dozer. Controls should not be used as handholds.
Safe Operation
-
Workers must be seated inside the cab with the seatbelt fastened before starting the track dozer. Never start the dozer while standing on the tracks outside the cab. Operators should verify that all controls function properly as they travel to the work site. Dozer blades and attachments need to remain close to the ground while moving. Keep a safe distance from the edge of sharp drops, slide areas or electric power lines. Workers must be careful to avoid job conditions that could lead to rollover when working on piles, slopes, hills and when crossing ditches. If the track dozer starts to slide on a steep grade, slow and turn downhill.
Parking
-
Track dozer safety is not complete until the dozer is parked and secured. Dozers should be parked on level ground whenever possible. If they must be parked on a grade the tracks should be blocked to prevent roll-away. Always shift into neutral and set the parking brake to immobilize the machine. Lower the blade and any other attachment to the ground. This will also help prevent the dozer from moving.
