General Chemical Safety
Abiding by strict safety procedures is essential in preventing chemical accidents in the lab or workplace. Always read the chemical's label and corresponding Material Safety Data Sheet before use and wear personal protective clothing when handling potentially hazardous chemicals.-
Personal Protective Clothing
-
Always wear safety goggles for protection from chemical splashes. Never wear contact lenses when working with chemicals as hazardous fumes can become trapped between the lens and your eyes. Wear closed-toe shoes, protective gloves and lab coats or similar protective clothing every time you work with chemicals.
Handling Chemicals
-
Double-check all labels to ensure that you're working with the correct chemical and never use a chemical from an unmarked container. Never pour water into chemicals; volatile and dangerous reactions can result, particularly when water is poured into an acid. If you're injured from chemical exposure, use the nearest eyewash or emergency shower immediately.
Material Safety Data Sheets
-
Carefully read a chemical's MSDS before working with it. The MSDS lists all of the chemical's hazardous ingredients and safe handling procedures. The MSDS also indicates symptoms of direct exposure to the chemical along with appropriate first-aid treatment for exposure.
