Types of Eye & Face Protectors
Safety is of primary concern when working with materials that create dust, fumes or toxins. All eye and face protectors are not created equal. There are different types of equipment to meet various needs and levels of exposure. Make sure you're covered--literally--by choosing the proper equipment for the job.-
Welding Mask
-
Welding masks are eye and face protectors that shield and shade the eyes from the extremely bright light generated by welding and protect the eyes and face from spark burns, metal splatter and combustion. The mask is attached to a webbing that fits over the head and the mask can be slid upward to the top of the head when not in use.
Dust Mask
-
Dust masks protect the mouth and nose from germs and breathable dust and filter out some fumes, but do not protect from toxic hazards like asbestos, lead or chemicals. They are typically made of pressed paper products similar to air conditioner filter material and have an elastic strap that wraps around the back of the head to hold them in place. Dust masks are commonly used by painters, lawn care workers, medical professionals and woodworkers.
Goggles
-
There are several types of protective goggles that are used for various tasks, tanning and hobbies. People who tan often balance tiny goggles on their noses to protect the delicate tissues of the eyes against exposure to the sun or tanning bed lights. Swimmers use waterproof goggles to protect their eyes from chlorine or salt when they're underwater.
People who enjoy hobbies or work in environments in which dust and other particles are produced wear goggles to protect the eyes from irritants. These goggles typically feature a wraparound style to protect against particles coming from the sides and the front. They may resemble large eyeglasses with legs that fit over the ears or have a strap that wraps around the back of the head.
