Electrical Laboratory Safety Rules & Regulations

Electricity is very useful, but also dangerous. Even relatively low currents can pose both health risks and fire risks. Every laboratory working with electrical equipment should adopt a set of rules and regulations that address safety issues in the lab.
  1. Workspace

    • Having a clean and organized workspace is the most elementary rule. Tools and devices should be put away when not in use. Drawers should be kept closed. Walkways should be kept clear and extension cords should be taped down to prevent accidents.

    Equipment

    • All electric devices should be unplugged before maintenance or repair. All devices should be inspected for signs of damage or burning before use. Electrical outlets should be inspected for signs of damage or burning before use. Never use electrical devices with a higher current capacity than its power supply. Never plug in devices with a combined total current capacity is greater than that of the power source.

    Other Considerations

    • Hands must always be dry when using electrical equipment. Appropriate laboratory wear includes low-flammability clothing and safety goggles. Never wear loose clothing when handling electrical equipment.
