Electrical Pallet Jack Safety
Electric pallet jacks are like small forklifts and operators must receive the same level of training in order to operate them. These units move smaller loads, but present many of the same dangers, as well as several unique dangers.-
Handling An Electric Jack
-
Electric pallet jacks have four basic controls, in addition to a horn: forward, back, raise the load, and lower the load. These are normally controlled by buttons at the top of the handle. Some forward and back operations are controlled by twisting a portion of the handle, much like a motorcycle grip. It is vital the operator know these controls and their functions without having to look at the controls. The operator must have the ability to react to a situation without taking time to look or search for the proper control button.
Proper Position of the Handle
-
The handle of the electric pallet jack acts as a kill switch for the machine. If the handle is in the upright position, or held too low, the machine will not operate. At the top of the handle will be a large button, usually red in color. If this button is pushed during operation the machine will stop and reverse until the button is released. This is to prevent the operator from becoming pinned between the handle of the moving machine and a wall, pallet rack or other item.
Travel Safety
-
In almost all cases, it is far safer to lead the machine rather than walk behind it. This allows you clear vision in the direction of travel. Operators need to be aware of the turn radius of the machine as to not cut corners to abruptly. These machines can come to an abrupt halt if they strike even a small piece of debris in the floor. This can cause the load to spill which can result in personal injury as well as damage to cargo, equipment and other items in the area. Operators must always be observant for obstacles in their travel path.
