OSHA Required Training Topics

According to the United States Department of Labor, “Congress created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance.” OSHA offers training to both employers and employees to keep the workplace safe and free of hazardous conditions.

  1. Occupational Safety and Health Standards for Construction

    • Training employees in OSHA standards for safety in the construction industry is the main topic of this class. It emphasizes how to deal with hazardous construction areas. The course includes instruction on investigating workplace accidents, preventing accidents by installing safety signs, safely handling gas and fuel, poisons, dust, various large-equipment dangers, demolition and other construction hazards.

    Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry

    • This entry level OSHA training is offered to employees in the general industry sector. The course emphasizes health and safety procedures for the workplace outlined by OSHA guidelines. The topics included in the training are record keeping, working surfaces, walking surfaces, wearing protective clothing, fire safety, necessary permits, handling hazardous materials and electrical safety.

    OSHA Guide to Industrial Hygiene

    • Concentration on OSHA standards for industrial hygiene is the main focus of this training. It includes: allowable time of exposure, respiratory safety, hazards, engineering control and industrial hygiene procedures. The course trains workers on strategies and procedures on how to recognize and deal with industrial hazards, respiratory protection, wearing protective clothing, air contamination, noise protection, ventilation and blood pathogens.

    Hazardous Materials

    • The handling of flammable liquids, gases and cryogenic materials are emphasized in this OSHA training. The course instructs employees on how to safely spray and dip materials and work around electricity. Other topics included in the class are classifying tanks, handling liquefied gases, procedures for emergency response and disposing of hazardous waste.

    Machinery and Machine Guarding Standards

    • Working safely with different types of machinery is highlighted in this course. It covers how to recognize the dangers of different machinery and offers hands-on training with machinery motion. The class instructs students in robotics, safe woodworking skills, handling a power press, abrasive materials and using hand tools and power tools.

    Respiratory Protection

    • Employees are trained in all aspects of respirators, including maintenance and overseeing in this class. Topics covered in the training are terminology, selecting respirators, testing, using different types of respirators and hands-on respirator training. The class familiarizes workers with types of air contamination, cleaning and maintenance safety, air quality standards, respiratory protection inspections and using SCBAs (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus).

    Ergonomics Applied to Musculoskeletal and Nerve Disorders

    • Emphasis on how to recognize, assess and control conditions in the work place that could cause musculoskeletal and nerve disorders is given in this OSHA training. The course covers the risks of vibration, climate, hazardous materials and manual lifting. The course also offers safe work place designs and the analysis of work place equipment.

    Confined Space Entry

    • Topics on assessing and preventing any hazards when entering a confined space are covered in the class. The training teaches evaluation of air quality and ventilation in a confined area. Students are instructed in testing air quality, wearing protective equipment and using atmosphere testing equipment, and the limits of explosion and oxygen meters.

    Excavation, Trenching and Soil Mechanics

    • Emphasis on the safety procedures for excavating and digging trenches are taught in this class. Students are instructed on stable soil mechanics, slopes and shored excavation walls. The course highlights materials used for safely shoring excavated walls with wood or hydraulics. The safe implementation of engineering tools is also covered.

    Electrical Standards

    • This course instructs students on OSHA’s electrical standards regarding electrical installations, cords, plugs, grounding equipment, circuit breakers and recognizing hazardous electrical situations. Other topics covered include: the fundamentals of voltage, amperes and electrical current, wearing protective equipment and the dangers of static electricity.

    Fall Arrest Systems

    • This OSHA training highlights the latest technology developments in fall protection. The course teaches fall protection systems, the inadequacies of fall arrest equipment and OSHA regulations regarding protection from falls. The class also offers demonstrations of fall protection equipment.

    Ergonomics Guidelines Training for Nursing Homes

    • The focus of this course is to teach workers how to design a safe, comfortable and efficient nursing home work place. The training offers solutions that can be used for safe work practices. Other topics included in the class are analyzing work systems, recognizing risks, enforcing solutions for problem jobs and the development of positive employee and management participation regarding workplace problem solving.
