Workers face many different job-related hazards every day, depending on their occupations. Hazards can be caused by things that you come into contact with regularly such as tools, equipment and building materials. It is important to take notice of your surroundings and identify anything that can cause occupational safety issues so that you will know how to prevent accidents in the workplace.-
Lifting Heavy Objects

Employees should not try to lift objects heavier than 50 pounds without asking for assistance. Do not dead lift any items. Bend at the knees and use your legs to push the weight up as you regain a standing position. This lessens the strain on your back and can help prevent injuries. If you are required to regularly lift or move heavy objects, make sure that you wear a back brace while working to help prevent injury due to strain or torn muscles. If an object is over-sized or too heavy for you to comfortably lift on your own do not be afraid to ask a coworker or supervisor for assistance.
Clothing

Make sure that you follow uniform and dress codes when at work. While it may not be fun to wear a uniform, it can help prevent accidents in the workplace. Many dress and uniform codes require that workers wear closed-toe shoes, tuck in shirts and keep accessories to a minimum. As an example, wearing closed-toe shoes can protect a worker from falling objects. Tucking in shirts and limiting the amount of accessories that you wear helps to keep you safe by limiting the items on you that can get caught in machinery or tools.
Weapons

Do not bring anything to work that could be construed as a weapon. This would include pocket knives, sharp scissors, long hair pins and shoes with metal heels. More obvious items include stun guns, firearms and pepper spray. Make sure that you report to your supervisor immediately if you see someone carrying a weapon on a work site. Do not attempt by yourself to engage someone who has a weapon and is hostile. Make sure that you report it and call authorities if necessary. Many companies enforce a no-tolerance policy with regard to weapons and, as a result, offenders could lose their job and possibly be imprisoned or receive a fine.
