Manufacturing Safety Rules

Safety rules for manufacturing businesses vary widely depending on what the company produces and the work that is done on-site. Still, there are some general safety rules that must be met by both management and staff. If they are not met, the company could lose its business license, face heavy fines, or possibly be shut down until the owners agree to comply with government safety rules.
  1. Meet OSHA Standards

    • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulates businesses to make sure they are meeting government safety rules for employees. OSHA requires that companies provide some sort of safety program for employees, and that a company report to OSHA on a regular basis regarding company safety procedures, lost-time accidents and employee safety concerns. Employees can report directly to OSHA if they think their company is not meeting government safety standards or if the company refuses to address or correct a safety problem.

    First Aid

    • Manufacturers should always have a first aid program in place. This can consist of strategic placing of first aid kits, with training for employees on what to do in an emergency, or even an on-site doctor or nurse to immediately treat injured or sick workers. Employees must be made aware of what first aid options are available to them in the workplace and how to properly use these resources. Supervisors should also be notified of any emergency requiring first aid treatment, and in extreme cases may be required to supervise the treatment of the employee.

    Workers Compensation

    • Manufacturers are required to carry workers compensation insurance. This insurance helps to protect the company in case of a workplace accident or emergency from being sued by the employee. It also helps the employee by providing medical coverage and compensation for lost wages due to an on-the-job accident. While workers compensation may not cover all of an injured employee’s medical expenses, it can help bridge any gaps in the employee’s personal health insurance. It also allows employees to be treated immediately by medical professionals if injured.
