Safety Rules for Welding Machines Used in Workshops Project
Welding machines are very often used in workshop projects, in some cases by operators who have not been properly trained on the machinery. Examples of workshop welding machine operators include an amateur utilizing the machinery at home and students in the classroom. Despite the level of competency with a welding machine, you can stay safe when working on your welding project.-
Equipment
-
Because a welding machine utilizes an open gas-powered flame, you must make sure that your body is protected from heat and sparks. This equipment can include welding gloves, a protective mask and even a fireproof apron to protect your upper body and clothing. This equipment protects your skin and eyes from sparks coming from the welding torch when it connects with the metal in your project. Welding gloves are often made of heavy leather or flame-resistant cloth. You can use safety goggles or a full-plated fireproof full-face mask for larger projects where you will be more exposed to the welding torch. Make sure that you have appropriate safety gear and that you understand how to use it prior to turning on the welding machine.
Perimeter
-
When using a welding machine in a workshop setting there is the potential to have a smaller workspace than a professional welder might have at work. No matter what size space you have to deal with when using a welding machine on your project, maintain a 3-foot safety perimeter. This perimeter should span 3 feet all around you and your project. You should clear all flammable objects and debris from this area, and keep other people outside of it when using the welding machine to help avoid injury.
Training
-
Before using your welding machine for the first time, even at home, take a short training class to learn how to use it properly. Classes are often available for free through local university community programs and home improvement centers at little or no cost to the student. If you can't make it to a class or find a training program near you, there are training videos available online that can help you to understand safety and correct operation of your welding machine.
