Safety Rules When Using a Drill Stand

Drill stands, sometimes used as part of a drill press, allow drills to maintain a stationary position without the aid of the operator. The drill stand is anchored to the floor or a work bench, allowing the drill to be operated without someone holding it. While these stands help improve the safety of using a drill, you should adhere to a number of safety rules while utilizing a drill stand.

Protect Yourself

• When using a drill stand, make sure that you are not wearing gloves, a tie or any other loose clothing that could potentially be caught in the drill. You should also be sure to wear safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes from any debris that could result from using the drill. Also, be sure that all drill bits being used are properly secured and are not bent prior to use. This will help to make sure that the drill functions properly and that the drill does not slip, potentially causing an accident.

Maintain a Perimeter

• Maintain a minimum perimeter of at least 3 feet between you and anyone else while operating a drill stand. This is to ensure that no one else could be injured by debris from use of the drill stand or by the drill itself. Make sure that this perimeter is clear of any clutter, debris or loose wires that could cause the drill to malfunction or you to slip. You should also keep your hands several inches away from any moving pieces of the drill. If the material you are using, such as metal, could be hazardous, use a clamp to secure it to your workspace rather than relying on your hands.

Training

• Do not use a drill stand if you have not been trained by a superior on how to use it properly. Accidents can be caused by someone who does not know how to use the machine correctly. Have a trained worker show you how to use the machine initially. If you have any questions or are concerned about using the drill stand with a particular type of material, ask a supervisor before risking using the machine incorrectly.
