Dangers of a Disc Sanding Machine
As with all power tools, certain safety precautions should be taken when operating a disc sander. Improper use or maintenance of any power equipment can result in injury not only to the operator but also to those nearby. It is important to understand safe operating procedures on any piece of equipment before using.-
Personal Safety
-
Always wear eye protection and dust masks. Sanding is a procedure that generates a large amount of dust that can enter the operator's eyes or throat. Keep fingers away from the abrasive disc and all other moving parts.
Clothing
-
Loose clothing, jewelry and long hair can get caught in the moving parts of a disc sander. Always tie back hair or remove loose clothing and jewelry. Even rings can get caught in disc sanders.
Training
-
Anyone operating a disc sander should be properly trained or familiarized with the equipment prior to using it. Awareness of the dangers involved in using a disc sander is an important part of avoiding injury.
Discs
-
The abrasive disc should not be torn or excessively worn. Replace worn or damaged abrasives before use. Always make sure the abrasive disc is secured properly to ensure that it does not slip off while the machine is being operated.
Secure Work Pieces
-
Always ensure that work pieces do not make contact with the disc until the disc has reached full speed. Always sand work pieces so that the disc is sanding on the downward stroke. Otherwise, the disc may grab the workpiece and lift it from the work table.
