OSHA Label Requirements

The use of industrial chemicals in the workplace presents a danger to employees if the products are not handled safely. OSHA has set up rules requiring the labeling of chemicals by companies and employee training by employers to minimize the risk of the chemicals.
  1. Rules for Manufacturers

    • Manufacturers or importers of workplace chemicals are required to assess the health risks of the chemicals they sell. Using the best scientific data they must create warnings and information about safe handling of the chemicals.

Information required includes the name of the chemicals, the allowable amount of environmental exposure, the potential health hazard from exposure, safe handling methods and personal protection equipment that must be used while exposed to the chemical. Company name and address must be labeled on all containers.

    Rules for Employers

    • Employees must be trained to use personal protection equipment.

Employers are required to maintain labels on chemical containers and advise their employees of the risks. Employers must provide training to employees about safe handling of chemicals in the workplace and provide safety equipment.

Employers must maintain material safety data sheets for all chemicals used in the workplace. Material safety data sheets provide information about the chemicals and hazards, as well as first aid procedures for employees and emergency personnel. This information must readily available to employees at all times.

In multiemployer workplaces, employers must inform other employers about potential risks, provide access to material safety data sheets, set up emergency procedures in case of accidental exposure and have an established hazard communication program.

    Transportation

    • Shipping and warehousing employers must keep warning labels intact.

For employers working in transportation of chemicals in sealed containers with no regular exposure, OSHA does not require training for specific chemicals. Employers must make sure warning labels on shipping containers are not removed.
