Instructions for Using Earplugs

Earplugs help protect your ears against excessive exposure to noise and elements in industrial and recreational settings. Swimmers, riflemen, factory workers, motorcycle riders and even individuals trying to get a good night of sleep can benefit from using earplugs. Foam earplugs are inexpensive and disposable, but in order to be effective, they must be inserted properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands with soap and water. Remove the earplugs from their dispenser or other packaging if applicable.

    • 2

Roll one foam earplug between your thumb and forefinger. Compress it to the narrowest diameter possible to allow the earplug to fit snugly into the first bend of your ear canal. Make sure there are no creases.

    • 3

Reach over the top of your head with one hand and pull and back and up on the top of your ear to open your ear canal.

    • 4

Place the tightly-rolled earplug well inside the ear canal before it starts to expand.
Ensure that the earplug is laying on the floor of your ear canal, so that it can expand to fill your entire ear canal.

    • 5

Wiggle the foam earplug as needed to adjust for a better fit.

    • 6

Perform a visual inspection in a mirror to make sure the earplugs are fitted correctly. Ensure that the ends of the earplugs are not clearly visible from the front.

    • 7

Perform an acoustic check for fit by cupping your hands firmly over your ears and then releasing. There should be no significant change in noise level between your cupped and un-cupped ears.
