Pedestal Grinder Safety

Pedestal grinders are used to sharpen tools and grind metal to a certain shape. When using a pedestal grinder, workers should practice proper safety precautions including wearing the right clothing, inspecting the machine before use and proper wheel mounting.
  1. Guards

    • Protective guards should cover the spindle and around 75 percent of the wheel, and should be secured and adjusted. The tongue guard should be at the most 1/4 inch from the edge of the wheel.

    Preparation

    • Be sure that the area around the grinder is clean, and that the grinder is securely mounted to the table. The wheels should also be checked for any defects to avoid breakage and flying debris.

    Clothing and Protection

    • Loose fitting clothing, jewelry and gloves can get caught in the wheel. Wear tight-fitting clothing and either goggles or a face shield, which will protect your face from flying debris and sparks.

    Use

    • When starting the machine, stand to the side and allow it to reach full speed. This will protect you if a damaged wheel flies apart. The wheel wears over time, so the tongue guard and tool rest will need adjustment. Change the wheel when these items can no longer be adjusted.

    Installing a New Wheel

    • When installing a new wheel, be sure to match the speed of the wheel to that recommended in the manufacturer's instructions. Gently tap the wheel on a non-metallic surface. If you hear a ringing sound, the wheel is safe. Tighten the wheel until it is secure, but without damaging the flange.
