OSHA Respirator Training

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires respirators to be utilized by personnel working in environments with airborne contaminates. Respirator training is required in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.134, Personal Protective Equipment. Several areas need to be covered during training.
  1. Purpose

    • Why respirators are used and how improper use can cause injury or death are explained during training.

    Proper Type

    • Training also covers the importance of knowing the proper type of respirator needed for expected hazards in the work environment.

    Use

    • Training must include proper use of a respirator in an emergency and actions to take if the equipment malfunctions.

    Maintenance and Storage

    • Respirators must be maintained to work properly, participants are told, and respirators must be stored correctly to avoid contamination.

    Medical Signs and Symptoms

    • Training participants also are taught the medical signs and symptoms of contamination that may indicate a respirator isn't working or isn't being used properly.

    Recurring Training

    • Respirator training is required before an employee enters a hazardous area, and it also is required a minimum of every 12 months. Training must be conducted more often if hazards change or if an employee demonstrates improper use of a respirator.
