Information on Ear Protectors

Ear protectors are devices that are placed in or over the ears to protect them. Most ear protectors are designed to protect the ears from loud noise, but some protect the ears from water.
  1. Hearing Loss

    • Prolonged exposure to loud noise has been shown to cause hearing loss. Ear protectors are required by federal law for workers who are exposed to 100 decibels or more for more than two hours a day, according to the Medical University of South Carolina website.

    Ear Muffs

    • Earmuffs are devices worn over the ears with a band or strap that connects the muffs. They provide the greatest hearing protection and can be worn daily for many months.

    Ear Plugs

    • Earplugs are inserted into the ear to seal out sound. Foam earplugs are disposable and usually only used once, but are inexpensive. Plastic earplugs are reusable but more expensive.

    Water Protection

    • Devices that include earplugs and headbands that are worn over the earplugs to keep them securely inserted are used to keep water out of ears when swimming or bathing, according to the Ear Band-It website.

    Ear Infections

    • People with ear infections or those who are more susceptible to ear infections, especially children, need to use ear protection while swimming or bathing. People who don't like water in their ears can also use them.
